Danshell recognised for autism support

Danshell Group has been officially recognised nationally for its outstanding support for people with learning disabilities and autism.

The company and some of its employees have been shortlisted in five categories at the National Learning Disability and Autism Awards 2017, which will be announced on 14th July. These awards celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities and aim to pay tribute to those individuals or organisations who excel in providing quality care.

Mel Ramsey, Danshell Group Chief Executive Officer, said: “It is fantastic and a testament to our staff and to the company that we have been nominated in five categories at these prestigious awards.

“It is an honour to have been officially recognised for the standards of support we provide in the learning disability and autism care sector.

“The entire team are passionate about making a difference to people’s lives, providing excellent care and helping the people we support to live life to the full.”

Bev, one of the people Danshell supports, who works at its central support office, was accompanied by staff to a judging day to which all shortlisted nominees were invited.

She said: “I am very, very happy about this and I can’t wait for the awards on the 14th July”.

Employees who are in the running to be named national winners in their categories are:

Amy Childs – The Manager Award
Amy, now recently promoted to the Midlands regional Consultant Nurse, but is being acknowledged for her time as Manager of Wast Hill Austim Service in Birmingham.

This category celebrates managers who have demonstrated a high level of expertise, exceptional skills in leadership and management, great support for colleagues and a positive commitment to person-centred support

Amy is an incredibly passionate nurse who strives for the best from her team and is supportive and encouraging to ensure staff excel in their support of service users.

During her time as Wast Hills Manager, the service won the Great Autism Practice category at last year’s National Learning Disability and Autism awards and achieved the ultimate accolade of an outstanding rating from the CQC.

Johnathan Whitwell – Sporting Chance Award
As Danshell’s North East Sports Co-ordinator, Johnathan has been shortlisted in this category for the second year running.   He has forged a reputation as being innovative when developing activities, making sure everyone can be involved, with the emphasis on the needs and ability of the individual.

The company also has been named a finalist in three other awards:

Employer of People with a Disability Award
Danshell supports individuals to help them improve their skills and enable them to access paid or voluntary work opportunities.

There are a number of successful work placements at the company including two people who work at its York Central Support Office, one supporting the Office Manager and the other working in the Marketing team.

In support of the nomination, Bev the Marketing Assistant said: “I like all the staff they help me a lot. I like to make teas and coffees. I like getting paid for my work. It’s good, good, good! I am happier. I like being a member of staff.”

Making a Difference Award
Danshell’s Wast Hills Bungalows in Birmingham are vying for this honour, which focuses on those who have promoted inclusion and community involvement in their work in the community, particularly where this has helped make a positive change to people’s lives.

Wast Hills is an outstanding independent hospital providing specialist support and services for adults on the autistic spectrum with associated complex needs.

They pride themselves on providing support that is person-centred and enables each individual to communicate in a way that is suited to their own needs.
