Residents had a ‘Fantastico’ Evening at Ebor Court

Residents at Ebor Court care home in York enjoyed an Italian evening as the home created a pop-up restaurant called ‘Little Italy’.  The café area was decorated with Italian flags and gingham tablecloths to enhance the theme of the evening.

Ebor Court, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes, understands the importance of nutrition within the care home environment and the pop-up restaurant is another step to ensure that the dining experience at the home is first class.  For many residents, they will have celebrated special occasions by dining out throughout their life time, but now their needs have reached a point where getting out of the home to visit a restaurant is difficult.  The pop-up restaurant is therefore their opportunity to once again have a full restaurant experience and gives them a sense of occasion.  Residents are required to book a table prior to the evening and they can then enjoy an a la carte menu and receive full table service.

Ebor Court residents were keen for the restaurant to have an Italian theme, and the menu consisted of seafood linguine or soup to start, chicken saltimbocca or lasagne for main and tiramisu or panna cotta for dessert.  The evening was concluded with tea, coffee and chocolates.  There was a singer on hand to heighten the atmosphere and residents commented that they felt like they were on holiday!  Staff dressed up as waiters to complete the restaurant experience and families were invited to dine with their relatives.

Yvonne Mulholland, Regional Activities Executive for Ebor Court, explains the benefit of the pop up restaurant experience.  She said “Little Italy was a great success at Ebor Court – the residents are still talking about it now.  Some residents struggle at mealtimes and it was great to see that this experience completely transformed them for the evening.  The staff loved it too, everyone got into the spirit of the event!”.

Ebor Court provides residential and dementia care for 64 local older people.  Through a varied programme of activities, highly nutritious food and inspirational spaces, the home provides residents with person-centred care, creating aspirational lifestyle choices.  After the success of Little Italy, everyone is looking forward to another pop-up restaurant once the residents have decided which theme to go for next!
