Non-council learning disability support

Guideposts Trust
Listens to and supports adults with learning difficulties to access their own community activities and lead fuller, more independent lives. For example, a Shared Lives scheme is run by Guideposts Trust and Essex County Council, whose purpose is to provide alternatives to residential care for those with learning disabilities by offering long term placements and short breaks in family-based settings. For Shared Lives in Southend contact the Department for People on Tel: 01702 215008.

Mental health

Your local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) should be your first point of contact if you have a mental health condition. CMHTs are community based assessment and treatment services for people suffering mental health conditions aged between 18 to 65 years. You can ask your GP to refer you or ask someone who knows you to contact the CMHT on your behalf.

There is increased demand for home care for people with mental health conditions arising
from greater use of supported living (explained on page 47) instead of care home placements.
Like other specialist care services, this can be paid for (if you have been assessed as eligible) with a personal budget, discussed on page 8.

In Essex, the North Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (NEPFT) and the South Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (SEPT) provide mental health services.

Some SEPT services cover Southend-on-Sea. Southend-on-Sea also has its own online directory, Southend-on-Sea’s Health and Wellbeing Information Point which covers all
services, including mental health. See contact details below.
