A resident at Park House care home in Peterborough has celebrated his 100th birthday and ten decades of living in the city, with a special party held at the home.

Cyril Weald turned 100 on 15th June and was joined by friends, relatives, residents and staff at a birthday party hosted by the Park House team.

Cyril moved to the home in 2015 and has lived all of his life in Peterborough, having been born and brought up in Silver Street in Fletton where his parents ran a shop.  In 1934 the family moved to a purpose built shop and sub-post office on the corner of Exeter Road and Peveril Road, which was then run by the family for the next 50 years.

Cyril joined the Royal Air Force just before the outbreak of World War II and as a member of the RAF Regiment saw active service in France. He was evacuated from St Nazaire over two weeks after the fall of Dunkirk. He became an RAF training instructor and reached the rank of staff sergeant.

After the war he re-joined the family business eventually taking over from his parents. He was actively involved in the Peterborough Branch of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents, becoming the local president on several occasions.

He married his wife Audrey in 1961 and they had a son Robert who still lives locally. After his retirement he lived in Longthorpe for 30 years and he and Audrey travelled extensively including visits to New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the USA.  Audrey sadly died in 2015. He also has two step-daughters Jen and Sue and a step-son David.

Home Manager Phil Barton said, “Cyril has led such an interesting and varied life, it has been wonderful to celebrate this with him as he marked his special birthday.

“On behalf of all of the Park House team, we wish him many very happy returns and hope he enjoyed his party, surrounded by friends and loved ones.”
