Several members of staff and friends of Beaumont Hall residential and dementia care home in Leicester joined forces last weekend to walk 9km through Abbey Park for the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk. The team included five members of staff, one resident and four members of her family.
Tracey Payne, Front of House Manager at Beaumont Hall, suggested the walk as a personal challenge after having a hip replacement four months ago. She was thrilled when other members of staff said that they would like to join her and even more excited when resident, Marina Gant, also asked to come along.
Marina, who celebrated her 82nd birthday the day after the walk, has a diagnosis of dementia and has lived at Beaumont Hall for nearly a year. Several members of Marina’s family also completed the route with her, including her 5 year old Great Granddaughter, Maisy. The walk opened with a short Zumba warm up and Marina thoroughly enjoyed tapping her feet to the jazzy music. She was one of the only participants in a wheelchair so everyone made a real fuss of her, and she relished taking in the sights of the park on the way round.
Tracey and the team dedicated hours of training prior to the event and knew that with every step they took, they were making a difference to the lives of people affected by dementia. Tracey said “We all made a personal commitment to do the walk and we worked as a team to get through it. It was such an emotional and rewarding day – it was truly humbling to see so many families who have been affected by dementia and I was so proud to be walking for all the residents at Beaumont Hall.”
There are several Memory Walk’s across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and they all raise money for the Alzheimer’s society. The Beaumont Hall team raised a total of £850 which could go some way to fund a PhD researcher for seven days to continue vital research into understanding dementia.
Beaumont Hall provides residential and dementia care for 60 local older people. Through a varied programme of activities, highly nutritious food and inspirational spaces, the home provides residents with person-centred care, creating aspirational lifestyle choices. The home has such a great time on the walk that they are now planning their next challenge!
