Please take a moment to read, reflect, and ask questions if you have a loved one in care.
We trust care homes with the people we love most. They deserve compassion, dignity, and the very best care at every stage of life. Sadly, this was not the case for our beautiful Mum.
One year on, I miss you more than words can express. What I still struggle to come to terms with is the guilt of not being with you when you took your last breath — a moment taken from me and your family while you were in the care of Avery Purley Gardens.
After three days and two nights at your bedside, never leaving you once, two carers — described as end-of-life trained — asked us to step out of the room so they could “freshen you up.” I was hesitant but made it very clear, twice, that if your condition changed in any way we were to be called immediately. We were just outside your door.
Despite you being unconscious and clearly nearing the end of your life, unnecessary care was given. Your bed was lowered, your clothing and bedding were changed, and you were rolled over placing visible strain on your breathing and failing heart. As you passed away a panic button was pressed instead of the door being opened to call us in. We were denied the chance to hold your hand and say goodbye — something I had promised you I would do. Attempts were even made to prevent us from entering the room.
Two internal investigations followed. Statements were taken from four family members who were outside the room, alongside accounts from the carers and duty nurse involved. These accounts were conflicting and inconsistent.
Only those present know exactly how Mum’s final moments were handled. What we do know is that the explanations given do not align with what we witnessed.
Mum you deserved dignity, peace, and to your family beside you,I will carry my love for you in my heart forever.
Avery Healthcare Purley Gardens have stated that their staff are trained in end-of-life care. However, when requested, no evidence of this training was provided. We were told that training is completed online, with no practical, in-person end-of-life training. I strongly believe more robust qualifications and hands-on training should be mandatory before families are asked to entrust their loved ones into care.
Our complaint was not upheld at Stage One. At Stage Two, four out of five issues were partially upheld, yet no action was taken beyond “lessons learned.”
If sharing this encourages even one family to ask questions, seek reassurance, or demand better standards, then Mum’s story matters. No family should experience this pain and grief we experienced

My dear mum went into signature at purley in 2022 as far as I was concerned it was the best care home,I had visited many prior to deciding on Purley, every single member of staff were fantastic and took the time to get to know me and my dear mum. It was friendly ,caring, they showed genuine concern and compassion for all residents, nursing side was excellent. But .......then Avery took over in June 2023, big mistake, lost count of staff that left within weeks,Management seemed to change with the seasons, food went downhill,as did cleaning and care. Since Avery has taken over this place has seriously gone down hill,no way is it a 5* care home. Unfortunately my mother passed away in April of this year, had she of been stronger I would not of hesitated to move her to another care home. I would definitely not recommend Avery care homes, the amount of staff they seem to get through should give you a clue. Don't get me wrong I dealt with some wonderful managers but none of them stayed long. I was told it's a business as long as we pay their extortionate fees each month nothing will change there. Big mistake Signature being taken over by Avery such a shame because it truly was a wonderful care home prior to Avery, and it's been very sad and distressing to see it go down.

After extremely poor care at another nursing home, my mother moved to Signature at Purley. She received excellent care and was so much happier. Staff were always friendly and helpful, food was outstanding, home was spotlessly clean and lady who was in charge of laundry was so kind and took pride in her work. Staff always considered my mums needs and kept me fully informed. Thank you so much everyone at signature and thank you for caring for caring for my mum in her last few weeks.

I have visited Signature Purley on a number of occasions and always receive a warm and friendly welcome.
I visit a number of residents, all of which seem really happy living at Signature.
All of the staff seem really happy, always hear laughter from the staff and residents.
I think the biggest compliment I can give would be that I would have no hesitation in my parents living here.
A big 5 stars from me.

Signature at Purley is a lovely, welcoming home where you can see how much the residents enjoy the facilities, activities and high quality food that is provided. From the moment I got there I was treated with such warmth and such a committment to ensuring we were looked after. This coupled with the great location, Purley is a fantastic home for anyone looking to stay there.
