Swarthmore takes great pride in providing person-centred residential, respite and end-of-life care for up to 40 residents over the age of 60. It’s warm and welcoming, peaceful and comfortable, and you can feel a sense of family from the moment you arrive.

Quaker values lie at the heart of our home: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality. We believe that these values resonate with people of all faiths, ages and backgrounds, which is why our home is such a wonderful place. Swarthmore is a not-for-profit concern with charitable status. It has been the responsibility of a Committee of Management serving on a voluntary basis. We have extended our home over the years, and as such, offer a choice of room styles and sizes depending on availability. Our wonderful team members provide kind, compassionate care tailored to each individual resident’s needs, likes and dislikes. We recruit and carefully train all members of staff. Furthermore, they have a chance to develop their skills by working towards gaining NVQ’s. As a residential care home, we also work closely with district nurses, Macmillan nurses and local doctors and dentists.

At Swarthmore, we have a dedicated activities team whose role is to put on a wide variety of sessions on a daily basis (see our website for an updated monthly schedule). All meals are freshly prepared on site daily and are served in our light, spacious dining room. Residents can choose to eat in their rooms if they wish. Breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and supper are all served. Snacks are also available throughout the day. We offer different bedroom shapes and styles, and some of our rooms also feature en-suite facilities and garden views. All bedrooms have Wi-Fi and an aerial point, and residents are free to organise their own contracts with BT/Sky at their own cost. Residents are welcome to bring their own furniture to Swarthmore. Additionally, our stunning garden provides year-round interest, having been designed for the seasons and for the senses. The heart of our home is the light and airy dual-aspect lounge offering views out onto our mature gardens. With luxurious furnishings and tasteful décor, it’s a wonderful place to relax. Our quiet room has a wide selection of books, where residents can enjoy some time to themselves. There are also double patio doors leading out into the garden. This is a lovely bright room that feels incredibly homely. We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to Swarthmore

My Mother was at Swarthmore for almost 2 years. She was well looked after and the care staff very attentive. Very good experience overall. Food plentiful and very good. Excellent activities twice a day including days out for those with mobility. We looked at a few care homes and found this one to be very homely. It's a hard decision to make when moving an elderly relative from their own home but would definitely recommend Swarthmore.

The team at Swarthmore supported my father-in-law for respite care for just a few weeks. During this time the improvements in his health and his determination to get well were profound due to the team's support. I would thoroughly recommend the home to anyone for short or long term care.

My Dad is a changed man since making Swarthmore his home since March2024. Previously his dementia and lack of purpose since my Mum died was making him a shell of the man he used to be, The staff are caring and attentive and the vast amount of activities he can do has made a difference to his life. Dancing, singing, table tennis and exercise classes have added a purpose and happiness to his life. He is safe, cared for and he has responded to this care. He loves being at Swarthmore. Thank you for looking after Jim our Dad Elaine

The staff at Swarthmore cared for my mother for eight years; adapting their care to her needs as they changed. They supported my efforts to prevent her from being moved from the home and I was so pleased she was able to remain there to the end surrounded by the Swarthmore family.

As you enter the building, an atmosphere of calm, peace and tranquility hits you. The staff are warm, caring , friendly , full of good humour and are evidently happy in their work… like one big happy family … staff and residents together. The residents are happy and well cared for and an understanding of their differing personalities is evident in the staffs interactions with them. My Mum has lived here for just over a year and I am comforted knowing she is being very well looked after and the staff genuinely care about her wellbeing. I couldn’t have found a better place for my dear Mum if I searched the country wide and far.
