Westerley Care Home, Westcliff is set near the town centre of Southend on Sea. The Home is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to provide accommodation for 20 Older People.

The property was purchased by Mutual Aid Homes in 1947 and converted, from a hotel, into a Residential Care Home for elderly Methodist (or Wesleyan Reform) Local Preachers, their widows, widowers or dependants. All denominations are now welcomed into residence if they support the fundamental values of life in a Christian community. The Home was officially opened in 1949, and extended in 2001. Structural repairs and improvements to the property have been made over the years to ensure that the Home provides up to date facilities for the care of elderly persons.

There are 19 rooms available for residents, five of which are suitable for shared occupation by married couples. Otherwise, residents are invariably accommodated in single rooms. Residents’ bedrooms are situated on the first and second floors and a mezzanine floor, which are all served by a passenger lift as well as on the ground floor. All rooms have en-suite facilities, many of them including showers. On the ground floor there is a large dining room and two lounges, one of which has television facilities and a small library which has normal and large print books. A mobile library visits the Home every 3 weeks with a good supply of books, many of which are available in large print. Each room is fitted with a call bell to enable residents to call a member of staff for assistance with personal needs. A ramp has been installed to the main entrance for ease of access for wheelchair users or those who have difficulty in negotiating steps, and all the rooms and facilities within the Home are accessible by ramps or lifts. Several rooms are equipped to recognise standards for disabled residents. The Home has pleasant views of the Thames Estuary from the front of the house and a small but attractive landscaped garden to the rear. Family and friends are welcome from 7am to 9.30pm and there may be overnight facilities available for residents visitors whom either travel long distance or if a resident is ill. Please enquire to ensure the room is available. Details of nearby guest houses or hotels can be obtained from the home. Westcliff has numerous Churches of most denominations; most are on the level and easy to get to. Westerley is serviced by two local Doctors’ practices and Southend University Hospital is close by, with transport that can be arranged through the hospital or Doctors surgery.

The care is not at all any good, the patients are left on their own from 2pm till 4.30ishpm, the carers walk in & out of the dinning room near the patient’s not bothering to ask if everyone is ok , the patients are left on their own & a couple of the patients want to go to the toilet & no carers are around to take them so they go on their own & often fall over, or go up the stairs on their own & fall because nobody is there. The carers don’t give out the medicine at the right times or the right amount. It is not very hygienic there either, my mum caught a few illnesses from the home & was hospitalised a couple of times , the last time my mum was in hospital for a month. Would not recommend at all.x

The most amazing place and staff. Mum felt this was her home and all the wonderful staff could not have been more caring. Thank you all so much.

Kate moved into The Westerley aged 87 and enjoyed 3 happy years there. She was physically limited to use of a zimmer frame but loved going out and about in the local area on her scooter which the home were able to provide storage for. She started in a tiny room up top but the lifts made access to the house easy. She ended up in a lovely large room with views of the sea which accommodated heaps of her own personal belongings and furniture. She loved the Christian daily reflection and the Weekly visit by clergy or others who provided a Holy Communion service, worship and reflection. She had attended church all her life and valued this small input at the Home. She could also scooter up to the local Baptist church. She loved the 2nd reception room known as the Library, and we as a family created many happy memories around Birthday’s, in that private space as well as celebrating Holy Communion with Kate not long before she died. The chéf had been there a long time, a delightful young man who was a very good cook. We couldn’t fault the regular staff. They loved Kate and we so appreciated their care right up to the end. Throughout her time there was regular Activity’s with a lovely lady who visited and provided singing and Bingo, etc. No where is 100% perfect, that’s life, but where mistakes were made in appointments they were rectified and the place felt like a home from home. Thank you.
